Benefits Check-up
Benefits Check-up

Have you ever wondered where you might be able to get more money? We make no promises but here is a source worth checking.

The Guide to Benefits for Seniors published by the National Council on Aging and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging is a great elder resource. It takes the form of a hard-copy booklet and an on-line program. It includes various types of public and private assistance in nine different categories including health, food, utilities and transportation. Assistance is available in the form of vouchers, discounts and free or reduced-price services.

The on-line program is called BenefitsCheckUp.org. It is the nation’s most comprehensive free service to screen seniors with limited income for benefits. More than 2,500 benefit programs are listed. Go to the Benefits Check Up site, answer a few questions on a form that pops up and the program sorts through all those services to see if you are eligible for any.

If you need help with the on-line program, Neighbor to Neighbor in the Nenes will be glad to assist. Sign Up for Services, or call us at 850-901-7818 or e-mail us as executivedirector@aginginneneland.org

Senior Discounts
Senior Discounts

Many businesses offer senior discounts. It is well known that AAPR members can get discounts on lots of products or services, but many discounts are available to those who are not AARP members as well.

The Senior List (theseniorlist.com) keeps a current list of available discounts here.

Restaurants often offer a senior menu (certain specials, usually near the back of the menu) with smaller portions and smaller prices. Many chain restaurants (especially fast food and casual dining establishments) offer a senior discount, but the requisite ages vary and not all locations may participate. Local restaurants may offer discounts as well - if you don't see it mentioned on the menu, it can't hurt to ask!

Many chain retail stores and some grocery stores offer discount days weekly or monthly; some require you to join their customer program to qualify for the discount. A little foresight and planning can add up to big savings.

Travel discounts are widely available as well. Airlines, hotels, and rental car agencies often offer senior discounts. However, travel apps may offer even better prices - if you need help setting up one or more of these apps, feel free to contact N3!

Cell phone companies, internet service providers, insurance companies, and other companies may offer special senior plans or may offer discounts to long-time customers. Think about any bills you pay monthly or annually - it doesn't hurt to ask if you qualify for a better price!
